Humanism

What is Humanism?

Many of us share humanist beliefs without knowing it. Humanism is the outcome of a long tradition of free thought that has inspired many of the world’s great thinkers and creative artists and gave rise to science itself. It is an ethical worldview, not just an atheistic or agnostic one.

Humanists believe that:
  • We can live good lives without prescribing to religious beliefs.

  • We should try to live happy and fulfilled lives and help others to do so in the name of peace and goodwill.

  • There are more things that unite humanity than divide us.

  • We believe in reason and compassion in guiding our ethical decisions and promote human wellbeing and dignity.

  • We believe in having a sense of wonder about the world and that a creative life is a rich, fulfilling and interesting life.

"We're a' Jock Tamson's bairns."

- Scottish saying -

This well-kent Scots phrase means that we are all of a common humanity and are all the same. I happen to think that it’s a pretty good summary of what Humanism is to me.

Essentially, Humanism is all about making the most of the one precious life that we have. In a practical sense this philosophy is best served by me being there when you need me. From the very start to the culmination of your special day, I will be with you every step of the way to guide, advise and be there for you! A ceremony which honours exactly who people are, filled with the best anecdotes, memories and unique flourishes is the best way to celebrate any major life milestone.

Caledonian Humanist Association

I’m a member of the Caledonian Humanist Association, a group of wonderful celebrants (and all-round, top human beans). We promote the values of Humanism and provide diverse, inclusive and equitable wedding ceremonies where all couples – irrespective of gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation or identity – feel valued, listened to and respected.

In the event of me not being available on your wedding day eg due to illness, our CHA network will be able to provide cover for your ceremony.

Through the Caledonian Humanist Association, I am fully insured and registered with the Registrar General at the National Records of Scotland to provide legal wedding ceremonies.
